Documentation work keeps chugging along; stuff for 6.6 includes:
- Work from Carlos Bilbao to integrate rustdoc output into the generated HTML documentation. mm: add orphaned kernel-doc to the rst files.
There are many files in mm/ that contain kernel-doc which is not currently published on kernel.org. Some of it is easily categorisable, but most of it is going into the miscellaneous documentation section to be organised later. Some files aren't ready to be included; they contain documentation with build errors. Or they're nommu.c which duplicates documentation from "real" MMU systems. Documentation/highmem: Add information about kmap_local_folio()
The differences between kmap_local_page() and kmap_local_folio() consist only in the first taking a pointer to a page and the second taking two arguments, a pointer to a folio and the byte offset within the folio which identifies the page. The two API's can be explained at the same time in the "Temporary Virtual Mappings" section of the Highmem's documentation. Add information about kmap_local_folio() in the same subsection that explains kmap_local_page(). mm/highmem: add notes about conversions from kmap{,_atomic}()
kmap() and kmap_atomic() have been deprecated. kmap_local_page() should always be used in new code and the call sites of the two deprecated functions should be converted. This latter task can lead to errors if it is not carried out with the necessary attention to the context around and between the maps and unmaps. Therefore, add further information to the Highmem's documentation for the purpose to make it clearer that (1) kmap() and kmap_atomic() must not any longer be called in new code and (2) developers doing conversions from kmap() amd kmap_atomic() are expected to take care of the context around and between the maps and unmaps, in order to not break the code. docs/mm: remove useless markup
It is enough to use a file name to cross-reference another rst document. Jon says: The right things will happen in the HTML output, readers of the plain-text will know immediately where to go, and we don't have to add the label clutter. Drop reference markup and unnecessary labels and use plain file names. Documentation/mm: rrefer kmap_local_page() and avoid kmap()
The reasoning for converting kmap() to kmap_local_page() was questioned recently.[1] There are two main problems with kmap(): (1) It comes with an overhead as mapping space is restricted and protected by a global lock for synchronization and (2) kmap() also requires global TLB invalidation when its pool wraps and it might block when the mapping space is fully utilized until a slot becomes available. Warn users to avoid the use of kmap() and instead use kmap_local_page(), by designing their code to map pages in the same context the mapping will be used. Documentation/mm: avoid invalid use of addresses from kmap_local_page()
Users of kmap_local_page() must be absolutely sure to not hand kernel virtual address obtained calling kmap_local_page() on highmem pages to other contexts because those pointers are thread local, therefore, they are no longer valid across different contexts. Extend the documentation of kmap_local_page() to warn users about the above-mentioned potential invalid use of pointers returned by kmap_local_page(). Documentation/mm: don't kmap*() pages which can't come from HIGHMEM
There is no need to kmap*() pages which are guaranteed to come from ZONE_NORMAL (or lower). Linux has currently several call sites of kmap{,_atomic,_local_page}() on pages which are clearly known which can't come from ZONE_HIGHMEM. Therefore, add a paragraph to highmem.rst, to explain better that a plain page_address() may be used for getting the address of pages which cannot come from ZONE_HIGHMEM, although it is always safe to use kmap_local_page() / kunmap_local() also on those pages.
