kernel-doc: allow object-like macros in ReST output
output_function_rst() does not handle object-like macros. It presents
a trailing "()" while output_function_man() handles these macros
correctly.
Update output_function_rst() to handle object-like macros.
Don't show the "Parameters" heading if there are no parameters.
For output_function_man(), don't show the "ARGUMENTS" heading if there
are no parameters.
I have tested this quite a bit with my ad hoc test files for both ReST
and man format outputs. The generated output looks good.

scripts/kernel-doc: Do not track section counter across processed files
The section counter tracks how many sections of kernel-doc were added.
The only real use of the counter value is to check if anything was
actually supposed to be output and give a warning is nothing is
available.
The current logic of remembering the initial value and then resetting
the value then when processing each file means that if a file has the
same number of sections as the previously processed one, a warning is
incorrectly given.

scripts/kernel-doc: Fix build time warnings
As stated at Documentation/kbuild/llvm.rst, to make usage of ccache one must set KBUILD_BUILD_TIMESTAMP=''. Setting this together with W=1 will trigger the following warning for every compiled file: date: invalid date ‘+%s’ This comes from kernel-doc script, that produces the following command when KBUILD_BUILD_TIMESTAMP is empty: date -d"" +%s That triggers the warning above. Add a space between the flag `-d` and the string argument to fix date command and remove the warning. mm/slab: Plumb kmem_buckets into __do_kmalloc_node()
Introduce CONFIG_SLAB_BUCKETS which provides the infrastructure to support separated kmalloc buckets (in the following kmem_buckets_create() patches and future codetag-based separation). Since this will provide a mitigation for a very common case of exploits, it is recommended to enable this feature for general purpose distros. By default, the new Kconfig will be enabled if CONFIG_SLAB_FREELIST_HARDENED is enabled (and it is added to the hardening.config Kconfig fragment). To be able to choose which buckets to allocate from, make the buckets available to the internal kmalloc interfaces by adding them as the second argument, rather than depending on the buckets being chosen from the fixed set of global buckets. Where the bucket is not available, pass NULL, which means "use the default system kmalloc bucket set" (the prior existing behavior), as implemented in kmalloc_slab(). To avoid adding the extra argument when !CONFIG_SLAB_BUCKETS, only the top-level macros and static inlines use the buckets argument (where they are stripped out and compiled out respectively). The actual extern functions can then be built without the argument, and the internals fall back to the global kmalloc buckets unconditionally. Networking changes for 6.10.
Core & protocols ---------------- - Complete rework of garbage collection of AF_UNIX sockets. AF_UNIX is prone to forming reference count cycles due to fd passing functionality. New method based on Tarjan's Strongly Connected Components algorithm should be both faster and remove a lot of workarounds we accumulated over the years. - Add TCP fraglist GRO support, allowing chaining multiple TCP packets and forwarding them together. Useful for small switches / routers which lack basic checksum offload in some scenarios (e.g. PPPoE). - Support using SMP threads for handling packet backlog i.e. packet processing from software interfaces and old drivers which don't use NAPI. This helps move the processing out of the softirq jumble. - Continue work of converting from rtnl lock to RCU protection. Don't require rtnl lock when reading: IPv6 routing FIB, IPv6 address labels, netdev threaded NAPI sysfs files, bonding driver's sysfs files, MPLS devconf, IPv4 FIB rules, netns IDs, tcp metrics, TC Qdiscs, neighbor entries, ARP entries via ioctl(SIOCGARP), a lot of the link information available via rtnetlink. - Small optimizations from Eric to UDP wake up handling, memory accounting, RPS/RFS implementation, TCP packet sizing etc. - Allow direct page recycling in the bulk API used by XDP, for +2% PPS. - Support peek with an offset on TCP sockets. - Add MPTCP APIs for querying last time packets were received/sent/acked, and whether MPTCP "upgrade" succeeded on a TCP socket. - Add intra-node communication shortcut to improve SMC performance. - Add IPv6 (and IPv{4,6}-over-IPv{4,6}) support to the GTP protocol driver. - Add HSR-SAN (RedBOX) mode of operation to the HSR protocol driver. - Add reset reasons for tracing what caused a TCP reset to be sent. - Introduce direction attribute for xfrm (IPSec) states. State can be used either for input or output packet processing. Things we sprinkled into general kernel code -------------------------------------------- - Add bitmap_{read,write}(), bitmap_size(), expose BYTES_TO_BITS(). This required touch-ups and renaming of a few existing users. - Add Endian-dependent __counted_by_{le,be} annotations. - Make building selftests "quieter" by printing summaries like "CC object.o" rather than full commands with all the arguments. Netfilter --------- - Use GFP_KERNEL to clone elements, to deal better with OOM situations and avoid failures in the .commit step. BPF --- - Add eBPF JIT for ARCv2 CPUs. - Support attaching kprobe BPF programs through kprobe_multi link in a session mode, meaning, a BPF program is attached to both function entry and return, the entry program can decide if the return program gets executed and the entry program can share u64 cookie value with return program. "Session mode" is a common use-case for tetragon and bpftrace. - Add the ability to specify and retrieve BPF cookie for raw tracepoint programs in order to ease migration from classic to raw tracepoints. - Add an internal-only BPF per-CPU instruction for resolving per-CPU memory addresses and implement support in x86, ARM64 and RISC-V JITs. This allows inlining functions which need to access per-CPU state. - Optimize x86 BPF JIT's emit_mov_imm64, and add support for various atomics in bpf_arena which can be JITed as a single x86 instruction. Support BPF arena on ARM64. - Add a new bpf_wq API for deferring events and refactor process-context bpf_timer code to keep common code where possible. - Harden the BPF verifier's and/or/xor value tracking. - Introduce crypto kfuncs to let BPF programs call kernel crypto APIs. - Support bpf_tail_call_static() helper for BPF programs with GCC 13. - Add bpf_preempt_{disable,enable}() kfuncs in order to allow a BPF program to have code sections where preemption is disabled. Driver API ---------- - Skip software TC processing completely if all installed rules are marked as HW-only, instead of checking the HW-only flag rule by rule. - Add support for configuring PoE (Power over Ethernet), similar to the already existing support for PoDL (Power over Data Line) config. - Initial bits of a queue control API, for now allowing a single queue to be reset without disturbing packet flow to other queues. - Common (ethtool) statistics for hardware timestamping. Tests and tooling ----------------- - Remove the need to create a config file to run the net forwarding tests so that a naive "make run_tests" can exercise them. - Define a method of writing tests which require an external endpoint to communicate with (to send/receive data towards the test machine). Add a few such tests. - Create a shared code library for writing Python tests. Expose the YAML Netlink library from tools/ to the tests for easy Netlink access. - Move netfilter tests under net/, extend them, separate performance tests from correctness tests, and iron out issues found by running them "on every commit". - Refactor BPF selftests to use common network helpers. - Further work filling in YAML definitions of Netlink messages for: nftables, team driver, bonding interfaces, vlan interfaces, VF info, TC u32 mark, TC police action. - Teach Python YAML Netlink to decode attribute policies. - Extend the definition of the "indexed array" construct in the specs to cover arrays of scalars rather than just nests. - Add hyperlinks between definitions in generated Netlink docs. Drivers ------- - Make sure unsupported flower control flags are rejected by drivers, and make more drivers report errors directly to the application rather than dmesg (large number of driver changes from Asbjørn Sloth Tønnesen). - Ethernet high-speed NICs: - Broadcom (bnxt): - support multiple RSS contexts and steering traffic to them - support XDP metadata - make page pool allocations more NUMA aware - Intel (100G, ice, idpf): - extract datapath code common among Intel drivers into a library - use fewer resources in switchdev by sharing queues with the PF - add PFCP filter support - add Ethernet filter support - use a spinlock instead of HW lock in PTP clock ops - support 5 layer Tx scheduler topology - nVidia/Mellanox: - 800G link modes and 100G SerDes speeds - per-queue IRQ coalescing configuration - Marvell Octeon: - support offloading TC packet mark action - Ethernet NICs consumer, embedded and virtual: - stop lying about skb->truesize in USB Ethernet drivers, it messes up TCP memory calculations - Google cloud vNIC: - support changing ring size via ethtool - support ring reset using the queue control API - VirtIO net: - expose flow hash from RSS to XDP - per-queue statistics - add selftests - Synopsys (stmmac): - support controllers which require an RX clock signal from the MII bus to perform their hardware initialization - TI: - icssg_prueth: support ICSSG-based Ethernet on AM65x SR1.0 devices - icssg_prueth: add SW TX / RX Coalescing based on hrtimers - cpsw: minimal XDP support - Renesas (ravb): - support describing the MDIO bus - Realtek (r8169): - add support for RTL8168M - Microchip Sparx5: - matchall and flower actions mirred and redirect - Ethernet switches: - nVidia/Mellanox: - improve events processing performance - Marvell: - add support for MV88E6250 family internal PHYs - Microchip: - add DCB and DSCP mapping support for KSZ switches - vsc73xx: convert to PHYLINK - Realtek: - rtl8226b/rtl8221b: add C45 instances and SerDes switching - Many driver changes related to PHYLIB and PHYLINK deprecated API cleanup. - Ethernet PHYs: - Add a new driver for Airoha EN8811H 2.5 Gigabit PHY. - micrel: lan8814: add support for PPS out and external timestamp trigger - WiFi: - Disable Wireless Extensions (WEXT) in all Wi-Fi 7 devices drivers. Modern devices can only be configured using nl80211. - mac80211/cfg80211 - handle color change per link for WiFi 7 Multi-Link Operation - Intel (iwlwifi): - don't support puncturing in 5 GHz - support monitor mode on passive channels - BZ-W device support - P2P with HE/EHT support - re-add support for firmware API 90 - provide channel survey information for Automatic Channel Selection - MediaTek (mt76): - mt7921 LED control - mt7925 EHT radiotap support - mt7920e PCI support - Qualcomm (ath11k): - P2P support for QCA6390, WCN6855 and QCA2066 - support hibernation - ieee80211-freq-limit Device Tree property support - Qualcomm (ath12k): - refactoring in preparation of multi-link support - suspend and hibernation support - ACPI support - debugfs support, including dfs_simulate_radar support - RealTek: - rtw88: RTL8723CS SDIO device support - rtw89: RTL8922AE Wi-Fi 7 PCI device support - rtw89: complete features of new WiFi 7 chip 8922AE including BT-coexistence and Wake-on-WLAN - rtw89: use BIOS ACPI settings to set TX power and channels - rtl8xxxu: enable Management Frame Protection (MFP) support - Bluetooth: - support for Intel BlazarI and Filmore Peak2 (BE201) - support for MediaTek MT7921S SDIO - initial support for Intel PCIe BT driver - remove HCI_AMP support Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCAAdFiEE6jPA+I1ugmIBA4hXMUZtbf5SIrsFAmZD6sQACgkQMUZtbf5S IrtLYw/+I73ePGIye37o2jpbodcLAUZVfF3r6uYUzK8hokEcKD0QVJa9w7PizLZ3 UO45ClOXFLJCkfP4reFenLfxGCel2AJI+F7VFl2xaO2XgrcH/lnVrHqKZEAEXjls KoYMnShIolv7h2MKP6hHtyTi2j1wvQUKsZC71o9/fuW+4fUT8gECx1YtYcL73wrw gEMdlUgBYC3jiiCUHJIFX6iPJ2t/TC+q1eIIF2K/Osrk2kIqQhzoozcL4vpuAZQT 99ljx/qRelXa8oppDb7nM5eulg7WY8ZqxEfFZphTMC5nLEGzClxuOTTl2kDYI/D/ UZmTWZDY+F5F0xvNk2gH84qVJXBOVDoobpT7hVA/tDuybobc/kvGDzRayEVqVzKj Q0tPlJs+xBZpkK5TVnxaFLJVOM+p1Xosxy3kNVXmuYNBvT/R89UbJiCrUKqKZF+L z/1mOYUv8UklHqYAeuJSptHvqJjTGa/fsEYP7dAUBbc1N2eVB8mzZ4mgU5rYXbtC E6UXXiWnoSRm8bmco9QmcWWoXt5UGEizHSJLz6t1R5Df/YmXhWlytll5aCwY1ksf FNoL7S4u7AZThL1Nwi7yUs4CAjhk/N4aOsk+41S0sALCx30BJuI6UdesAxJ0lu+Z fwCQYbs27y4p7mBLbkYwcQNxAxGm7PSK4yeyRIy2njiyV4qnLf8= =EsC2 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'net-next-6.10' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/netdev/net-next Pull networking updates from Jakub Kicinski: "Core & protocols: - Complete rework of garbage collection of AF_UNIX sockets. BPF: - Add eBPF JIT for ARCv2 CPUs. Driver API: - Skip software TC processing completely if all installed rules are marked as HW-only, instead of checking the HW-only flag rule by rule. Tests and tooling: - Remove the need to create a config file to run the net forwarding tests so that a naive "make run_tests" can exercise them. Drivers: - Make sure unsupported flower control flags are rejected by drivers, and make more drivers report errors directly to the application rather than dmesg (large number of driver changes from Asbjørn Sloth Tønnesen). - Ethernet high-speed NICs: - Broadcom (bnxt): - support multiple RSS contexts and steering traffic to them - support XDP metadata - make page pool allocations more NUMA aware - Intel (100G, ice, idpf): - extract datapath code common among Intel drivers into a library - use fewer resources in switchdev by sharing queues with the PF - add PFCP filter support - add Ethernet filter support - use a spinlock instead of HW lock in PTP clock ops - support 5 layer Tx scheduler topology - nVidia/Mellanox: - 800G link modes and 100G SerDes speeds - per-queue IRQ coalescing configuration - Marvell Octeon: - support offloading TC packet mark action - Ethernet NICs consumer, embedded and virtual: - stop lying about skb->truesize in USB Ethernet drivers, it messes up TCP memory calculations - Google cloud vNIC: - support changing ring size via ethtool - support ring reset using the queue control API - VirtIO net: - expose flow hash from RSS to XDP - per-queue statistics - add selftests - Synopsys (stmmac): - support controllers which require an RX clock signal from the MII bus to perform their hardware initialization - TI: - icssg_prueth: support ICSSG-based Ethernet on AM65x SR1.0 devices - icssg_prueth: add SW TX / RX Coalescing based on hrtimers - cpsw: minimal XDP support - Renesas (ravb): - support describing the MDIO bus - Realtek (r8169): - add support for RTL8168M - Microchip Sparx5: - matchall and flower actions mirred and redirect - Ethernet switches: - nVidia/Mellanox: - improve events processing performance - Marvell: - add support for MV88E6250 family internal PHYs - Microchip: - add DCB and DSCP mapping support for KSZ switches - vsc73xx: convert to PHYLINK - Realtek: - rtl8226b/rtl8221b: add C45 instances and SerDes switching - Many driver changes related to PHYLIB and PHYLINK deprecated API cleanup - Ethernet PHYs: - Add a new driver for Airoha EN8811H 2.5 Gigabit PHY. - micrel: lan8814: add support for PPS out and external timestamp trigger - WiFi: - Disable Wireless Extensions (WEXT) in all Wi-Fi 7 devices drivers. scripts/kernel-doc: drop "_noprof" on function prototypes
Memory profiling introduces macros as hooks for function-level allocation profiling[1]. Memory allocation functions that are profiled are named like xyz_alloc() for API access to the function. xyz_alloc() then calls xyz_alloc_noprof() to do the allocation work. The kernel-doc comments for the memory allocation functions are introduced with the xyz_alloc() function names but the function implementations are the xyz_alloc_noprof() names. This causes kernel-doc warnings for mismatched documentation and function prototype names. By dropping the "_noprof" part of the function name, the kernel-doc function name matches the function prototype name, so the warnings are resolved. kernel-doc: fix struct_group_tagged() parsing
kernel-doc emits a warning on struct_group_tagged() if you describe your
struct group member:
include/net/libeth/rx.h:69: warning: Excess struct member 'fp' description in 'libeth_fq'
The code:
/**
* struct libeth_fq - structure representing a buffer queue
* @fp: hotpath part of the structure
* @pp: &page_pool for buffer management
[...]
*/
struct libeth_fq {
struct_group_tagged(libeth_fq_fp, fp,
struct page_pool *pp;
[...]
);
When a struct_group_tagged() is encountered, we need to build a
`struct TAG NAME;` from it, so that it will be treated as a valid
embedded struct.
Decouple the regex and do the replacement there. As far as I can see,
this doesn't produce any new warnings on the current mainline tree.

compiler_types: add Endianness-dependent __counted_by_{le,be}
Some structures contain flexible arrays at the end and the counter for them, but the counter has explicit Endianness and thus __counted_by() can't be used directly. To increase test coverage for potential problems without breaking anything, introduce __counted_by_{le,be}() defined depending on platform's Endianness to either __counted_by() when applicable or noop otherwise. Maybe it would be a good idea to introduce such attributes on compiler level if possible, but for now let's stop on what we have. Acked-by: Kees Cook <keescook@chromium.org> Acked-by: Gustavo A. R. kernel-doc: Add unary operator * to $type_param_ref
In kernel-doc comments, unary operator * collides with Sphinx/ docutil's markdown for emphasizing. This resulted in additional warnings from "make htmldocs": WARNING: Inline emphasis start-string without end-string. , as reported recently [1]. Those have been worked around either by escaping * (like \*param) or by using inline-literal form of ``*param``, both of which are specific to Sphinx/docutils. Such workarounds are against the kenrel-doc's ideal and should better be avoided. Instead, add "*" to the list of unary operators kernel-doc recognizes and make the form of *@param available in kernel-doc comments. scripts/kernel-doc: reindent
This file is using an ungodly mixture of 4 spaces, 2-wide tabs, 4-wide tabs, _and_ 8-wide tabs, making it really hard to find good editor settings for working with this file. Bite the bullet and reindent it by hand. I tried using both perltidy and vim, but neither of them were up to the task without changing too much or getting confused about what they were supposed to be doing. I did change a few instances of } else into } else (and same for elsif); the file is again written using both styles, and I left functions which already seemed self-consistent alone. You can verify that this commit only changes whitespace using e.g.: git diff --ignore-all-space --word-diff or to see (only) the instances where newlines were added/removed: git diff --ignore-all-space You can also see the delta from what perltidy would have wanted to do to this file (when asked to only indent it), which isn't that much in the end: perltidy -io -fnl scripts/kernel-doc git diff --no-index scripts/kernel-doc{,.tdy} Signed-off-by: Vegard Nossum <vegard.nossum@oracle.com> Acked-by: Randy Dunlap <rdunlap@infradead.org> Signed-off-by: Jonathan Corbet <corbet@lwn.net> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20240208161705.888385-1-vegard.nossum@oracle.com |

That had the delightful consequence of adding some 600 warnings to the docs build. kernel-doc: handle a void function without producing a warning
Currently a void function can produce a warning:
main.c:469: warning: contents before sections
This one is from arch/x86/kernel/cpu/sgx/main.c (which is not included
in any produced kernel documentation output).
Handle this by setting $in_doc_sect to 1 whenever any recognized
document section name is processed.

scripts/kernel-doc: restore warning for Excess struct/union
The warning for Excess struct or union member description was
removed when the $nested parameter of check_sections() was removed.
This causes some kernel-doc notation warnings to be missed.
Recently the kernel test robot somehow reported an Excess member. The
code in kernel-doc has not issued that warning since kernel v4.16, so I
don't know how the robot did it. (See the Link for the report.)
drivers/net/wireless/intel/iwlwifi/fw/dbg.c:86: warning: Excess struct/union/enum/typedef member 'trans_len' description in 'iwl_fw_dump_ptrs'
I patched that warning away even though I could not reproduce the
warning from kernel-doc. The warning should be issued for extraneous
struct member or union member description, so restore it.

Set up build time warnings to safeguard against future header changes of organized structs. scripts/kernel-doc: Fix the regex for matching -Werror flag
Swarup reported a "make htmldocs" warning:
Variable length lookbehind is experimental in regex;
marked by <-- HERE in m/(?<=^|\s)-Werror(?=$|\s)
<-- HERE / at ./scripts/kernel-doc line 188.
Akira managed to reproduce it by perl v5.34.0.
On second thought, it is not necessary to have the complicated
"lookahead and lookbehind" things, and the regex can be simplified.
Generally, the kernel-doc warnings should be considered as errors only
when "-Werror" flag is set in KCFLAGS, but not when
"-Werror=<diagnostic-type>" is set, which means there needs to be a
space or start of string before "-Werror", and a space or end of string
after "-Werror".
The following cases have been tested to work as expected:
* kernel-doc warnings are considered as errors:
$ KCFLAGS="-Werror" make W=1
$ KCFLAGS="-Wcomment -Werror" make W=1
$ KCFLAGS="-Werror -Wundef" make W=1
$ KCFLAGS="-Wcomment -Werror -Wundef" make W=1
* kernel-doc warnings remain as warnings:
$ KCFLAGS="-Werror=return-type" make W=1
$ KCFLAGS="-Wcomment -Werror=return-type" make W=1
$ KCFLAGS="-Werror=return-type -Wundef" make W=1
$ KCFLAGS="-Wcomment -Werror=return-type -Wundef" make W=1
The "Variable length lookbehind is experimental in regex" warning is
also resolved by this patch.

kernel-doc: don't let V=1 change outcome
The kernel-doc script currently reports a number of issues only in "verbose" mode, but that's initialized from V=1 (via KBUILD_VERBOSE), so if you use KDOC_WERROR=1 then adding V=1 might actually break the build. This is rather unexpected. Change kernel-doc to not change its behaviour wrt. errors (or warnings) when verbose mode is enabled, but rather add separate warning flags (and -Wall) for it. Allow enabling those flags via environment/make variables in the kernel's build system for easier user use, but to not have to parse them in the script itself. hardening updates for v6.2-rc1
- Convert flexible array members, fix -Wstringop-overflow warnings, and fix KCFI function type mismatches that went ignored by maintainers (Gustavo A. R. iommufd for 6.2
iommufd is the user API to control the IOMMU subsystem as it relates to managing IO page tables that point at user space memory. It takes over from drivers/vfio/vfio_iommu_type1.c (aka the VFIO container) which is the VFIO specific interface for a similar idea. We see a broad need for extended features, some being highly IOMMU device specific: - Binding iommu_domain's to PASID/SSID - Userspace IO page tables, for ARM, x86 and S390 - Kernel bypassed invalidation of user page tables - Re-use of the KVM page table in the IOMMU - Dirty page tracking in the IOMMU - Runtime Increase/Decrease of IOPTE size - PRI support with faults resolved in userspace Many of these HW features exist to support VM use cases - for instance the combination of PASID, PRI and Userspace IO Page Tables allows an implementation of DMA Shared Virtual Addressing (vSVA) within a guest. Dirty tracking enables VM live migration with SRIOV devices and PASID support allow creating "scalable IOV" devices, among other things. As these features are fundamental to a VM platform they need to be uniformly exposed to all the driver families that do DMA into VMs, which is currently VFIO and VDPA. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iHUEABYIAB0WIQRRRCHOFoQz/8F5bUaFwuHvBreFYQUCY5ct7wAKCRCFwuHvBreF YZZ5AQDciXfcgXLt0UBEmWupNb0f/asT6tk717pdsKm8kAZMNAEAsIyLiKT5HqGl s7fAu+CQ1pr9+9NKGevD+frw8Solsw4= =jJkd -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'for-linus-iommufd' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/jgg/iommufd Pull iommufd implementation from Jason Gunthorpe: "iommufd is the user API to control the IOMMU subsystem as it relates to managing IO page tables that point at user space memory. string: Rewrite and add more kern-doc for the str*() functions
While there were varying degrees of kern-doc for various str*()-family functions, many needed updating and clarification, or to just be entirely written. Update (and relocate) existing kern-doc and add missing functions, sadly shaking my head at how many times I have written "Do not use this function". Include the results in the core kernel API doc. docs: improve the HTML formatting of kerneldoc comments
Make a few changes to cause functions documented by kerneldoc to stand out better in the rendered documentation. Specifically, change kernel-doc to put the description section into a ".. container::" section, then add a bit of CSS to indent that section relative to the function prototype (or struct or enum definition). Tweak a few other CSS parameters while in the neighborhood to improve the formatting. Acked-by: Mauro Carvalho Chehab <mchehab@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Jonathan Corbet <corbet@lwn.net> |

scripts: kernel-doc: Always increment warnings counter
Some warnings do not increment the warnings counter making the behavior of running kernel-doc with -Werror unlogical as some warnings will be generated but not treated as errors. Fix this by creating a helper function that always incrementing the warnings counter every time a warning is emitted. There is one location in get_sphinx_version() where a warning is not touched as it concerns the execution environment of the kernel-doc and not the documentation being processed. Incrementing the counter only have effect when running kernel-doc in either verbose mode (-v or environment variable KBUILD_VERBOSE) or when treating warnings as errors (-Werror or environment variable KDOC_WERROR). In both cases the number of warnings printed is printed to stderr and for the later the exit code of kernel-doc is non-zero if warnings where encountered. Simple test case to demo one of the warnings, $ cat test.c /** * foo() - Description */ int bar(); # Without this change $ ./scripts/kernel-doc -Werror -none test.c test.c:4: warning: expecting prototype for foo(). Prototype was for bar() instead # With this change $ ./scripts/kernel-doc -Werror -none test.c test.c:4: warning: expecting prototype for foo().
