locking/atomic: sparc: Fix arch_cmpxchg64_local()
Anatoly reports that since commit: ff5b4f1ed580c59d ("locking/atomic: sparc: move to ARCH_ATOMIC") ... it's possible to reliably trigger an oops by running: stress-ng -v --mmap 1 -t 30s ... which results in a NULL pointer dereference in __split_huge_pmd_locked(). The underlying problem is that commit ff5b4f1ed580c59d left arch_cmpxchg64_local() defined in terms of cmpxchg_local() rather than arch_cmpxchg_local(). In <asm-generic/atomic-instrumented.h> we wrap these with macros which use identically-named variables. When cmpxchg_local() nests inside cmpxchg64_local(), this casues it to use an unitialized variable as the pointer, which can be NULL. This can also be seen in pmdp_establish(), where the compiler can generate the pointer with a `clr` instruction: 0000000000000360 <pmdp_establish>: 360: 9d e3 bf 50 save %sp, -176, %sp 364: fa 5e 80 00 ldx [ %i2 ], %i5 368: 82 10 00 1b mov %i3, %g1 36c: 84 10 20 00 clr %g2 370: c3 f0 90 1d casx [ %g2 ], %i5, %g1 374: 80 a7 40 01 cmp %i5, %g1 378: 32 6f ff fc bne,a %xcc, 368 <pmdp_establish+0x8> 37c: fa 5e 80 00 ldx [ %i2 ], %i5 380: d0 5e 20 40 ldx [ %i0 + 0x40 ], %o0 384: 96 10 00 1b mov %i3, %o3 388: 94 10 00 1d mov %i5, %o2 38c: 92 10 00 19 mov %i1, %o1 390: 7f ff ff 84 call 1a0 <__set_pmd_acct> 394: b0 10 00 1d mov %i5, %i0 398: 81 cf e0 08 return %i7 + 8 39c: 01 00 00 00 nop This patch fixes the problem by defining arch_cmpxchg64_local() in terms of arch_cmpxchg_local(), avoiding potential shadowing, and resulting in working cmpxchg64_local() and variants, e.g. 0000000000000360 <pmdp_establish>: 360: 9d e3 bf 50 save %sp, -176, %sp 364: fa 5e 80 00 ldx [ %i2 ], %i5 368: 82 10 00 1b mov %i3, %g1 36c: c3 f6 90 1d casx [ %i2 ], %i5, %g1 370: 80 a7 40 01 cmp %i5, %g1 374: 32 6f ff fd bne,a %xcc, 368 <pmdp_establish+0x8> 378: fa 5e 80 00 ldx [ %i2 ], %i5 37c: d0 5e 20 40 ldx [ %i0 + 0x40 ], %o0 380: 96 10 00 1b mov %i3, %o3 384: 94 10 00 1d mov %i5, %o2 388: 92 10 00 19 mov %i1, %o1 38c: 7f ff ff 85 call 1a0 <__set_pmd_acct> 390: b0 10 00 1d mov %i5, %i0 394: 81 cf e0 08 return %i7 + 8 398: 01 00 00 00 nop 39c: 01 00 00 00 nop Fixes: ff5b4f1ed580c59d ("locking/atomic: sparc: move to ARCH_ATOMIC") Reported-by: Anatoly Pugachev <matorola@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Mark Rutland <mark.rutland@arm.com> Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@kernel.org> Tested-by: Anatoly Pugachev <matorola@gmail.com> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20210707083032.567-1-mark.rutland@arm.com |

asm-generic/unaligned: Unify asm/unaligned.h around struct helper
The get_unaligned()/put_unaligned() helpers are traditionally architecture specific, with the two main variants being the "access-ok.h" version that assumes unaligned pointer accesses always work on a particular architecture, and the "le-struct.h" version that casts the data to a byte aligned type before dereferencing, for architectures that cannot always do unaligned accesses in hardware. Based on the discussion linked below, it appears that the access-ok version is not realiable on any architecture, but the struct version probably has no downsides. This series changes the code to use the same implementation on all architectures, addressing the few exceptions separately. mm/thp: define default pmd_pgtable()
Currently most platforms define pmd_pgtable() as pmd_page() duplicating the same code all over. Instead just define a default value i.e pmd_page() for pmd_pgtable() and let platforms override when required via <asm/pgtable.h>. All the existing platform that override pmd_pgtable() have been moved into their respective <asm/pgtable.h> header in order to precede before the new generic definition. This makes it much cleaner with reduced code. mm/hugetlb: change parameters of arch_make_huge_pte()
Patch series "Subject: [PATCH v2 0/5] Implement huge VMAP and VMALLOC on powerpc 8xx", v2. This series implements huge VMAP and VMALLOC on powerpc 8xx. Powerpc 8xx has 4 page sizes: - 4k - 16k - 512k - 8M At the time being, vmalloc and vmap only support huge pages which are leaf at PMD level. Here the PMD level is 4M, it doesn't correspond to any supported page size. For now, implement use of 16k and 512k pages which is done at PTE level. Support of 8M pages will be implemented later, it requires use of hugepd tables. To allow this, the architecture provides two functions: - arch_vmap_pte_range_map_size() which tells vmap_pte_range() what page size to use. A stub returning PAGE_SIZE is provided when the architecture doesn't provide this function. - arch_vmap_pte_supported_shift() which tells __vmalloc_node_range() what page shift to use for a given area size. A stub returning PAGE_SHIFT is provided when the architecture doesn't provide this function. This patch (of 5): At the time being, arch_make_huge_pte() has the following prototype: pte_t arch_make_huge_pte(pte_t entry, struct vm_area_struct *vma, struct page *page, int writable); vma is used to get the pages shift or size. vma is also used on Sparc to get vm_flags. page is not used. writable is not used. In order to use this function without a vma, replace vma by shift and flags. Also remove the used parameters. net: retrieve netns cookie via getsocketopt
It's getting more common to run nested container environments for testing cloud software. One of such examples is Kind [1] which runs a Kubernetes cluster in Docker containers on a single host. Each container acts as a Kubernetes node, and thus can run any Pod (aka container) inside the former. This approach simplifies testing a lot, as it eliminates complicated VM setups. Unfortunately, such a setup breaks some functionality when cgroupv2 BPF programs are used for load-balancing. The load-balancer BPF program needs to detect whether a request originates from the host netns or a container netns in order to allow some access, e.g. to a service via a loopback IP address. Typically, the programs detect this by comparing netns cookies with the one of the init ns via a call to bpf_get_netns_cookie(NULL). However, in nested environments the latter cannot be used given the Kubernetes node's netns is outside the init ns. To fix this, we need to pass the Kubernetes node netns cookie to the program in a different way: by extending getsockopt() with a SO_NETNS_COOKIE option, the orchestrator which runs in the Kubernetes node netns can retrieve the cookie and pass it to the program instead. Thus, this is following up on Eric's commit 3d368ab87cf6 ("net: initialize net->net_cookie at netns setup") to allow retrieval via SO_NETNS_COOKIE. This is also in line in how we retrieve socket cookie via SO_COOKIE. locking/atomic: sparc: move to ARCH_ATOMIC
We'd like all architectures to convert to ARCH_ATOMIC, as once all architectures are converted it will be possible to make significant cleanups to the atomics headers, and this will make it much easier to generically enable atomic functionality (e.g. debug logic in the instrumented wrappers). As a step towards that, this patch migrates sparc to ARCH_ATOMIC. The arch code provides arch_{atomic,atomic64,xchg,cmpxchg}*(), and common code wraps these with optional instrumentation to provide the regular functions. locking/atomic: cmpxchg: make generic a prefix
The asm-generic implementations of cmpxchg_local() and cmpxchg64_local() use a `_generic` suffix to distinguish themselves from arch code or wrappers used elsewhere. Subsequent patches will add ARCH_ATOMIC support to these implementations, and will distinguish more functions with a `generic` portion. To align with how ARCH_ATOMIC uses an `arch_` prefix, it would be helpful to use a `generic_` prefix rather than a `_generic` suffix. In preparation for this, this patch renames the existing functions to make `generic` a prefix rather than a suffix. There should be no functional change as a result of this patch. sparc/vio: make remove callback return void
The driver core ignores the return value of struct bus_type::remove() because there is only little that can be done. To simplify the quest to make this function return void, let struct vio_driver::remove() return void, too. All users already unconditionally return 0, this commit makes it obvious that returning an error code is a bad idea and should prevent that future driver authors consider returning an error code. Note there are two nominally different implementations for a vio bus: one in arch/sparc/kernel/vio.c and the other in arch/powerpc/platforms/pseries/vio.c. This patch only addresses the former. asm-generic: use asm-generic/unaligned.h for most architectures
There are several architectures that just duplicate the contents of asm-generic/unaligned.h, so change those over to use the file directly, to make future modifications easier. The exceptions are: - arm32 sets HAVE_EFFICIENT_UNALIGNED_ACCESS, but wants the unaligned-struct version - ppc64le disables HAVE_EFFICIENT_UNALIGNED_ACCESS but includes the access-ok version - most m68k also uses the access-ok version without setting HAVE_EFFICIENT_UNALIGNED_ACCESS. - sh4a has a custom inline asm version - openrisc is the only one using the memmove version that generally leads to worse code. tracing updates for 5.13
New feature: The "func-no-repeats" option in tracefs/options directory. When set the function tracer will detect if the current function being traced is the same as the previous one, and instead of recording it, it will keep track of the number of times that the function is repeated in a row. And when another function is recorded, it will write a new event that shows the function that repeated, the number of times it repeated and the time stamp of when the last repeated function occurred. Enhancements: In order to implement the above "func-no-repeats" option, the ring buffer timestamp can now give the accurate timestamp of the event as it is being recorded, instead of having to record an absolute timestamp for all events. This helps the histogram code which no longer needs to waste ring buffer space. New validation logic to make sure all trace events that access dereferenced pointers do so in a safe way, and will warn otherwise. Fixes: No longer limit the PIDs of tasks that are recorded for "saved_cmdlines" to PID_MAX_DEFAULT (32768), as systemd now allows for a much larger range. This caused the mapping of PIDs to the task names to be dropped for all tasks with a PID greater than 32768. Change trace_clock_global() to never block. This caused a deadlock. Clean ups: Typos, prototype fixes, and removing of duplicate or unused code. Better management of ftrace_page allocations. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iIoEABYIADIWIQRRSw7ePDh/lE+zeZMp5XQQmuv6qgUCYI/1vBQccm9zdGVkdEBn b29kbWlzLm9yZwAKCRAp5XQQmuv6qiL0AP9EemIC5TDh2oihqLRNeUjdTu0ryEoM HRFqxozSF985twD/bfkt86KQC8rLHwxTbxQZ863bmdaC6cMGFhWiF+H/MAs= =psYt -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'trace-v5.13' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace Pull tracing updates from Steven Rostedt: "New feature: - A new "func-no-repeats" option in tracefs/options directory. Enhancements: - In order to implement the above "func-no-repeats" option, the ring buffer timestamp can now give the accurate timestamp of the event as it is being recorded, instead of having to record an absolute timestamp for all events. This helps the histogram code which no longer needs to waste ring buffer space. - New validation logic to make sure all trace events that access dereferenced pointers do so in a safe way, and will warn otherwise. Fixes: - No longer limit the PIDs of tasks that are recorded for "saved_cmdlines" to PID_MAX_DEFAULT (32768), as systemd now allows for a much larger range. This caused the mapping of PIDs to the task names to be dropped for all tasks with a PID greater than 32768. - Change trace_clock_global() to never block. This caused a deadlock. Clean ups: - Typos, prototype fixes, and removing of duplicate or unused code. - Better management of ftrace_page allocations" * tag 'trace-v5.13' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace: (32 commits) tracing: Restructure trace_clock_global() to never block tracing: Map all PIDs to command lines ftrace: Reuse the output of the function tracer for func_repeats tracing: Add "func_no_repeats" option for function tracing tracing: Unify the logic for function tracing options tracing: Add method for recording "func_repeats" events tracing: Add "last_func_repeats" to struct trace_array tracing: Define new ftrace event "func_repeats" tracing: Define static void trace_print_time() ftrace: Simplify the calculation of page number for ftrace_page->records some more ftrace: Store the order of pages allocated in ftrace_page tracing: Remove unused argument from "ring_buffer_time_stamp() tracing: Remove duplicate struct declaration in trace_events.h tracing: Update create_system_filter() kernel-doc comment tracing: A minor cleanup for create_system_filter() kernel: trace: Mundane typo fixes in the file trace_events_filter.c tracing: Fix various typos in comments scripts/recordmcount.pl: Make vim and emacs indent the same scripts/recordmcount.pl: Make indent spacing consistent tracing: Add a verifier to check string pointers for trace events ... |

mm/vmalloc: fix HUGE_VMAP regression by enabling huge pages in vmalloc_to_page
vmalloc_to_page returns NULL for addresses mapped by larger pages[*]. Whether or not a vmap is huge depends on the architecture details, alignments, boot options, etc., which the caller can not be expected to know. Therefore HUGE_VMAP is a regression for vmalloc_to_page. This change teaches vmalloc_to_page about larger pages, and returns the struct page that corresponds to the offset within the large page. This makes the API agnostic to mapping implementation details. [*] As explained by commit 029c54b095995 ("mm/vmalloc.c: huge-vmap: fail gracefully on unexpected huge vmap mappings") [npiggin@gmail.com: sparc32: add stub pud_page define for walking huge vmalloc page tables] Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20210324232825.1157363-1-npiggin@gmail.com Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20210317062402.533919-3-npiggin@gmail.com Signed-off-by: Nicholas Piggin <npiggin@gmail.com> Reviewed-by: Miaohe Lin <linmiaohe@huawei.com> Reviewed-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Cc: Borislav Petkov <bp@alien8.de> Cc: Catalin Marinas <catalin.marinas@arm.com> Cc: Ding Tianhong <dingtianhong@huawei.com> Cc: "H. asm-generic/io.h: Add a non-posted variant of ioremap()
ARM64 currently defaults to posted MMIO (nGnRE), but some devices require the use of non-posted MMIO (nGnRnE). Introduce a new ioremap() variant to handle this case. ioremap_np() returns NULL on arches that do not implement this variant. sparc64 is the only architecture that needs to be touched directly, because it includes neither of the generic io.h or iomap.h headers. This adds the IORESOURCE_MEM_NONPOSTED flag, which maps to this variant and marks a given resource as requiring non-posted mappings. This is implemented in the resource system because it is a SoC-level requirement, so existing drivers do not need special-case code to pick this ioremap variant. Then this is implemented in devres by introducing devm_ioremap_np(), and making devm_ioremap_resource() automatically select this variant when the resource has the IORESOURCE_MEM_NONPOSTED flag set. Rework of the X86 irq stack handling:

sparc64: Use arch_validate_flags() to validate ADI flag
When userspace calls mprotect() to enable ADI on an address range, do_mprotect_pkey() calls arch_validate_prot() to validate new protection flags. arch_validate_prot() for sparc looks at the first VMA associated with address range to verify if ADI can indeed be enabled on this address range. This has two issues - (1) Address range might cover multiple VMAs while arch_validate_prot() looks at only the first VMA, (2) arch_validate_prot() peeks at VMA without holding mmap lock which can result in race condition. arch_validate_flags() from commit c462ac288f2c ("mm: Introduce arch_validate_flags()") allows for VMA flags to be validated for all VMAs that cover the address range given by user while holding mmap lock. This patch updates sparc code to move the VMA check from arch_validate_prot() to arch_validate_flags() to fix above two issues. locking/arch: Move qrwlock.h include after qspinlock.h
include/asm-generic/qrwlock.h was trying to get arch_spin_is_locked via asm-generic/qspinlock.h. However, this does not work because architectures might be using queued rwlocks but not queued spinlocks (csky), or because they might be defining their own queued_* macros before including asm/qspinlock.h. To fix this, ensure that asm/spinlock.h always includes qrwlock.h after defining arch_spin_is_locked (either directly for csky, or via asm/qspinlock.h for other architectures). The only inclusion elsewhere is in kernel/locking/qrwlock.c. That one is really unnecessary because the file is only compiled in SMP configurations (config QUEUED_RWLOCKS depends on SMP) and in that case linux/spinlock.h already includes asm/qrwlock.h if needed, via asm/spinlock.h. it was used for two things - dealing with unusual ->kregs for kernel threads and "emulate unaligned userland accesses for this thread"; the former is killed off by the previous commit, the latter never had been set in the first place. Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> |

sparc32: kill lookup_fault()
No callers left. As the result we can kill * lookup_fault() itself * the kludge in do_sparc_fault() for passing the arguments for eventual lookup_fault() into exception handler and labels used by it * the last of magical exception table entries (in __clear_user()) Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> |

local64.h: make <asm/local64.h> mandatory
Make <asm-generic/local64.h> mandatory in include/asm-generic/Kbuild and remove all arch/*/include/asm/local64.h arch-specific files since they only #include <asm-generic/local64.h>. This fixes build errors on arch/c6x/ and arch/nios2/ for block/blk-iocost.c. Build-tested on 21 of 25 arch-es. (tools problems on the others) Yes, we could even rename <asm-generic/local64.h> to <linux/local64.h> and change all #includes to use <linux/local64.h> instead. Here we convert the rest of the archs to support TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL. With that done, we can get rid of JOBCTL_TASK_WORK from task_work and signal.c, and also remove a deadlock work-around in io_uring around knowing that signal based task_work waking is invoked with the sighand wait queue head lock. The motivation for this work is to decouple signal notify based task_work, of which io_uring is a heavy user of, from sighand. The sighand lock becomes a huge contention point, particularly for threaded workloads where it's shared between threads. Even outside of threaded applications it's slower than it needs to be. Roman Gershman <romger@amazon.com> reported that his networked workload dropped from 1.6M QPS at 80% CPU to 1.0M QPS at 100% CPU after io_uring was changed to use TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL. The time was all spent hammering on the sighand lock, showing 57% of the CPU time there [1]. There are further cleanups possible on top of this. One example is TIF_PATCH_PENDING, where a patch already exists to use TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL instead. Hopefully this will also lead to more consolidation, but the work stands on its own as well" [1] https://github.com/axboe/liburing/issues/215 * tag 'tif-task_work.arch-2020-12-14' of git://git.kernel.dk/linux-block: (28 commits) io_uring: remove 'twa_signal_ok' deadlock work-around kernel: remove checking for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL signal: kill JOBCTL_TASK_WORK io_uring: JOBCTL_TASK_WORK is no longer used by task_work task_work: remove legacy TWA_SIGNAL path sparc: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL riscv: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL nds32: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL ia64: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL h8300: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL c6x: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL alpha: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL xtensa: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL arm: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL microblaze: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL hexagon: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL csky: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL openrisc: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL sh: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL um: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL ... |
