Merge series from Cezary Rojewski <cezary.rojewski@intel.com>:
A spiritual successor to haswell/baytrail removal series [1].
The avs-driver found in sound/soc/intel/avs is a direct replacement to
the existing skylake-driver. It covers all features supported by it and
more and aligns with the recommended flows and requirements based on
Windows driver equivalent.
The skylake-driver related UAPI has been removed with "ASoC: Drop
soc-topology ABI v4 support" [2].
For the official kernel tree the deprecation begun with v6.0. Most
skylake-drivers users moved to avs- or SOF-driver when AudioDSP
capabilities are available on the platform or to snd-hda-intel
(sound/pci/hda) when such capabilities are not.
For the supported trees the deprecation begun with v5.4 with v5.15 being
the first where the skylake-driver is disabled entirely.
All machine board drivers that consume this DSP driver have their
replacements present within sound/soc/intel/avs/boards/ directory.

This patch enables the TI TAS2781 amplifier SoC for the ASUS ROG ALLY X.
This is a design change from the original ASUS ROG ALLY, creating the need
for this patch. All other Realtek Codec settings seem to be re-used from
the original ROG ALLY design (on the ROG ALLY X). This patch maintains the
previous settings for the Realtek codec portion, but enables the I2C
binding for the TI TAS2781 amplifier (instead of the Cirrus CS35L41 amp
used on the original ASUS ROG ALLY).
One other requirement must be met for audio to work on the ASUS ROG ALLY X.
A proper firmware file in the correct location with a proper symlink. We

this firmware file for now until proper linux-firmware upstreaming can
occur. https://github.com/ublue-os/bazzite

The tas2781-i2c driver gets an IRQ from either ACPI or device tree,
then proceeds to check if the IRQ has a corresponding GPIO and in
case it does enforce the GPIO as input and set a label on it.
This is abuse of the API:
- First we cannot guarantee that the numberspaces of the GPIOs and
the IRQs are the same, i.e that an IRQ number corresponds to
a GPIO number like that.
- Second, GPIO chips and IRQ chips should be treated as orthogonal
APIs, the irqchip needs to ascertain that the backing GPIO line
is set to input etc just using the irqchip.
- Third it is using the legacy <linux/gpio.h> API which should not
be used in new code yet this was added just a year ago.
Delete the offending code.
If this creates problems the GPIO and irqchip maintainers can help
to fix the issues.
It *should* not create any problems, because the irq isn't
used anywhere in the driver, it's just obtained and then
left unused.

When the CS35L41 loads its firmware, it has a number of controls to
affect its behaviour. Currently, these controls are exposed as ALSA
Controls.
These controls were never intended to be exposed to users but the
firmware doesn't mark them hidden, so make the driver ignore them.
Any changes in the coefficients handled by these controls needs to
be matched to the individual system by SSID, which is already handled
using the tuning file, when firmware is loaded, so UCM should not be
setting these controls anyway.

A number of laptops have gone to market with old firmware versions that
export controls that have since been hidden, but we can't just install a
newer firmware because the firmware for each product is customized and
qualified by the OEM. The issue is that alsactl save and restore has no
idea what controls are good to persist which can lead to
misconfiguration.
There is no reason that the UCM or user should need to interact with any
of the ALSA controls for the firmware coefficients so they can be
removed entirely, this also simplifies the driver.

The recent regression report revealed that the use of WC pages for AMD
HDMI device together with AMD IOMMU leads to unexpected truncation or
noises. The issue seems triggered by the change in the kernel core
memory allocation that enables IOMMU driver to use always S/G
buffers. Meanwhile, the use of WC pages has been a workaround for the
similar issue with standard pages in the past. So, now we need to
apply the workaround conditionally, namely, only when IOMMU isn't in
place.
This patch modifies the workaround code to check the DMA ops at first

We want sometimes to keep the runtime PM disabled persistently just
like we did for the PM deny-list in the previous change, e.g. for
testing some buggy device. This patch enhances the existing
pm_blacklist option for achieving it easily.
The default behavior doesn't change -- the driver looks up the deny
list and disables the runtime PM if matches. However, when
pm_blacklist=1 option is set, now the driver disables the runtime PM
completely, just like the deny-list does.
Update the documentation for this option, too.

We have a runtime PM deny-list for the devices that show the problems
(typically click noises) at runtime suspend/resume, and when it
matches, the driver disables the default runtime PM. However, we
still allow the runtime PM changed via power_save module option
dynamically, and the desktop system often tweaks it. This ended up
with a re-enablement of the runtime PM that surprises users, suddenly
suffering from the noises.
This patch changes the driver behavior slightly: when the device is
listed in the deny-list, ignore the power_save option change and keep
the original (that is, off) runtime PM state.

Some devices indicate click noises at suspend or shutdown when the
speakers are unmuted. This patch adds a helper,
snd_hda_gen_shutup_speakers(), to work around it. The new function is
supposed to be called at suspend or shutdown by the codec driver, and
it mutes the speakers.
The mute status isn't cached, hence the original mute state will be
restored at resume again.

The previous fix (7aeb259086) only handles the unsol_event reporting
during interrupts and does not include the polling mode used to set
jackroll_ms, so now we are replacing it with

Samsung Galaxy Book3 Pro 360 sends a large amount of data to the codec
through hda processing coefficients. This data was captured using a
modified version of QEMU, but the actual content of the data remains
opaque to me. Elliding any part of the data seems to cause sound to

Lots of changes in this cycle, but mostly for cleanups and
refactoring. Significant amount of changes are about DT schema
conversions for ASoC at this time while we see other usual
suspects, too. Some highlights below:
Core:
- Re-introduction of PCM sync ID support API
- MIDI2 time-base extension in ALSA sequencer API
ASoC:
- Syncing of features between simple-audio-card and the two
audio-graph cards
- Support for specifying the order of operations for components
within cards to allow quirking for unusual systems
- Lots of DT schema conversions
- Continued SOF/Intel updates for topology, SoundWire, IPC3/4
- New support for Asahi Kasei AK4619, Cirrus Logic CS530x, Everest
Semiconductors ES8311, NXP i.MX95 and LPC32xx, Qualcomm LPASS
v2.5 and WCD937x, Realtek RT1318 and RT1320 and Texas
Instruments PCM5242
HD-audio:
- More quirks, Intel PantherLake support, senarytech codec support
- Refactoring of Cirrus codec component-binding
Others:
- ALSA control kselftest improvements, and fixes for input value
checks in various drivers

Until the commit e11f0f90a6 ("ALSA: pcm: remove SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL1_INFO
internal command"), there was a possibility to pass information
about the synchronized streams to the user space. The mentioned
commit removed blindly the appropriate code with an irrelevant comment.
The revert may be appropriate, but since this API was lost for several
years without any complains, it's time to improve it. The hardware
parameters may change the used stream clock source (e.g. USB hardware)
so move this synchronization ID to hw_params as read-only field.
It seems that pipewire can benefit from this API (disable adaptive
resampling for perfectly synchronized PCM streams) now.
Note that the contents of ID is not supposed to be used for direct
comparison with a specific byte sequence. The "empty" case is when
all bytes are zero (driver does not offer this information)
and all other cases must be only used for equal comparison among
PCM streams (including different sound cards) if they are using
identical hardware clock.

and this eventually breaks the existing quirk for Lenovo Yoga Duet 7

It is possible that during system boot when there multiple devices
attempting simultaneous initialization on a slow control bus the
download of firmware and tuning data may take a user perceivable amount
of time (a slow I2C bus with 4 amps this work could take over 2
seconds).
Adopt a pattern used in the ASoC driver and perform this activity in a
background thread so that interactive performance is not impaired. The
system_long_wq is a parallel workqueue and driver instances will perform
their firmware downloads in parallel to make best use of available bus
bandwidth.

In preparation for moving duplicated members from the hda_component
structure introduce a parent structure that wraps the array of
components. This also allows us to confine the knowledge of the maximum
number of entries to the hda_component files and eliminate passing that
redundant information around and making direct accesses to the array.

This is a very big update, in large part due to extensive work the Intel
people have been doing in their drivers though it's also been busy
elsewhere. There's also a big overhaul of the DAPM documentation from
Luca Ceresoli arising from the work he did putting together his recent
ELC talk, and he also contributed a new tool for visualising the DAPM
state.
- A new tool dapm-graph for visualising the DAPM state.
- Substantial fixes and clarifications for the DAPM documentation.
- Very large updates throughout the Intel audio drivers.
- Cleanups of accessors for driver data, module labelling, and for
constification.
- Modernsation and cleanup work in the Mediatek drivers.
- Several fixes and features for the DaVinci I2S driver.
- New drivers for several AMD and Intel platforms, Nuvoton NAU8325,

The cs_dsp instance is initialized in the driver probe() so it
should be freed in the driver remove(). Also fix a missing call
to cs_dsp_remove() in the error path of cs35l56_hda_common_probe().
The call to cs_dsp_remove() was being done in the component unbind
callback cs35l56_hda_unbind(). This meant that if the driver was
unbound and then re-bound it would be using an uninitialized cs_dsp
instance.
It is best to initialize the cs_dsp instance in probe() so that it
can return an error if it fails. The component binding API doesn't
have any error handling so there's no way to handle a failure if
cs_dsp was initialized in the bind.

Move the initialization of the shared struct hda_component array into
hda_component_manager_bind().
The purpose of the manager bind() callback is to allow it to perform
initialization before binding in the component drivers. This is the
correct place to initialize the shared data.
The original implementation initialized the shared data in
hda_component_manager_init(). This is only done once during probe()
of the manager driver. So if the component binding was unbound and
then rebound, the shared data would not be re-initialized.

Use the control private_free callback to free the associated data
block. This ensures that the memory won't leak, whatever way the
control gets destroyed.
The original implementation didn't actually remove the ALSA
controls in hda_cs_dsp_control_remove(). It only freed the internal
tracking structure. This meant it was possible to remove/unload the
amp driver while leaving its ALSA controls still present in the
soundcard. Obviously attempting to access them could cause segfaults

IRQs used for CS35L41 HDA are used to detect and attempt to recover
from errors. Without these interrupts, the driver should behave as
normal.
For laptops which contain a bad configuration for the interrupt in the
BIOS, the current behaviour of failing when trying to configure the
interrupt means the probe fails, and audio is broken.
It is better for the user experience if the driver instead warns that
no interrupt is configured rather than simply failing.
The drawback is that if an error occurs without the interrupt, we
firstly would not be able to trace the issue, and secondly would not
be able to attempt to recover from the issue, but this is better than
failing immediately.

due to several vendors having come in with relatively large fixes at

The meson fixes from Jerome fix some rare timing issues with blocking

which fixes clocking for some platforms. The SOF series from Peter
builds to the fix to avoid spurious resets of ChainDMA which triggered

Firstly, it is pointless to explicitly disable the power to the dock
prior to resetting the FPGA, as the latter will do the former anyway.
Secondly, it doesn't make much sense to check whether the FPGA is
already programmed. It's much simpler to just presume it is, and issue
the self-reset command. If it isn't, the effect isn't worse than the
checks themselves. As a side effect, we lose the info if the reset
fails, but there is no plausible way how that could happen unless the
card burns out while operating, and in that case we'll detect a firmware
upload failure a bit later anyway.

A side effect of making the dock monitoring interrupt-driven was that
we'd be very quick to program a freshly connected dock. However, for
unclear reasons, the dock does not work when we do that - despite the
FPGA netlist upload going just fine. We work around this by adding a
delay before programming the dock; for safety, the value is several
times as much as was determined empirically.
Note that a badly timed dock hot-plug would have triggered the problem
even before the referenced commit - but now it would happen 100% instead
of about 3% of the time, thus making it impossible to work around by
re-plugging.

The FPGA access through the GPIO port does not interfere with other
sound processor register access, so there is no need to subject it to
emu_lock. And after moving all FPGA access out of the interrupt handler,
it does not need to be IRQ-safe, either.
What's more, attaching the dock causes a firmware upload, which takes
several seconds. We really don't want to disable IRQs for this long, and
even less also have someone else spin with IRQs disabled waiting for us.
Therefore, use a mutex for FPGA access locking.
This makes the code somewhat more noisy, as we need to wrap bigger
sections into the mutex, as it needs to enclose the spinlocks.
The latter has the "side effect" of fixing dock FPGA programming in a
corner case: a really badly timed mixer access right between entering
FPGA programming mode and uploading the netlist would mess up the
protocol.

The actual event processing was already done by workqueue items. We can
move the event dispatching there as well, rather than doing it already
in the interrupt handler callback.
This change has a rather profound "side effect" on the reliability of
the FPGA programming: once we enter programming mode, we must not issue
any snd_emu1010_fpga_{read,write}() calls until we're done, as these
would badly mess up the programming protocol. But exactly that would
happen when trying to program the dock, as that triggers GPIO interrupts
as a side effect. This is mitigated by deferring the actual interrupt
handling, as workqueue items are not re-entrant.
To avoid scheduling the dispatcher on non-events, we now explicitly
ignore GPIO IRQs triggered by "uninteresting" pins, which happens a lot
as a side effect of calling snd_emu1010_fpga_{read,write}().

As the function is now available, call it directly from
snd_emu10k1_emu1010_init(), thus making the MicroDock firmware loading

not affect the AudioDocks of rev1 cards, as these have no independent
