Modules changes for v6.13-rc1
Highlights for this merge window: * The whole caching of module code into huge pages by Mike Rapoport is going in through Andrew Morton's tree due to some other code dependencies. That's really the biggest highlight for Linux kernel modules in this release. With it we share huge pages for modules, starting off with x86. Expect to see that soon through Andrew! * Helge Deller addressed some lingering low hanging fruit alignment enhancements by. It is worth pointing out that from his old patch series I dropped his vmlinux.lds.h change at Masahiro's request as he would prefer this to be specified in asm code [0]. [0] https://lore.kernel.org/all/20240129192644.3359978-5-mcgrof@kernel.org/T/#m9efef5e700fbecd28b7afb462c15eed8ba78ef5a * Matthew Maurer and Sami Tolvanen have been tag teaming to help get us closer to a modversions for Rust. In this cycle we take in quite a lot of the refactoring for ELF validation. I expect modversions for Rust will be merged by v6.14 as that code is mostly ready now. * Adds a new modules selftests: kallsyms which helps us tests find_symbol() and the limits of kallsyms on Linux today. * We have a realtime mailing list to kernel-ci testing for modules now which relies and combines patchwork, kpd and kdevops: - https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/linux-modules/list/ - https://github.com/linux-kdevops/kdevops/blob/main/docs/kernel-ci/README.md - https://github.com/linux-kdevops/kdevops/blob/main/docs/kernel-ci/kernel-ci-kpd.md - https://github.com/linux-kdevops/kdevops/blob/main/docs/kernel-ci/linux-modules-kdevops-ci.md If you want to help avoid Linux kernel modules regressions, now its simple, just add a new Linux modules sefltests under tools/testing/selftests/module/ That is it. All new selftests will be used and leveraged automatically by the CI. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQJGBAABCgAwFiEENnNq2KuOejlQLZofziMdCjCSiKcFAmdGbrcSHG1jZ3JvZkBr ZXJuZWwub3JnAAoJEM4jHQowkoinIDEQAMa1H7hsneNT0Z/YewzOfdSKZIkTzpk3 /fLl7PfWyFvk7yHT1JiUXidS/80SEMnWb+u8Sn00/uvcJomnPcK9oTwTzBQ0vefl FWIUM0DmBzBOi5xdjrPLjg5o6TFt7hVae3hoRJzIlLD02vGfrPYpyHo7XmRrLM4C 8p+3geziwZMpjcGM254eSiTGxNL8z1iZVRsz8QrrBruRfBDnHNgwtmK097v13Xdb qmLX6CN2irmNPZSZwDqP8QL2sJk9qQpNdPmpjMvaY3VfaMVkM46FLy0k9yeXXNqw E1p/GuylCZq4NG1hic9zB1I1CE910ugCztJnPcGw4C7CSm54YoLiUJrIeRyTZhk6 et9N25AlJHxyq72GIRTMQCA9Njxaavx5KilvuWYZmaILfeI0k/3gvcxUqp/EJQ9Q axPu69HJFRSKMVh1o+QrSaPmEtSydpYwuuNJ6ONRpq5I3bzOVDSCroceAdXEMO9K yoSfm4KwN/BSnmX6KVLonrSM91nv2/v9UokuaZMV/CsDpXIZs996PvAoopCm1Twb K3fv0uD+2q2FTOOBInkuRJo2zBUvNnDRPAS2pE3DMXy8xhsQXdovEpjijuCGb8eC y0R+I4RIugIB2n6YBUFfyma1veGlT3PtrWQnO6E3YJpv8bqIJoYVT5IGo9M9YRO9 lzjtR9NzGtmh =Ny84 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'modules-6.13-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/modules/linux Pull modules updates from Luis Chamberlain: - The whole caching of module code into huge pages by Mike Rapoport is going in through Andrew Morton's tree due to some other code dependencies. alloc_tag: load module tags into separate contiguous memory
When a module gets unloaded there is a possibility that some of the allocations it made are still used and therefore the allocation tags corresponding to these allocations are still referenced. As such, the memory for these tags can't be freed. This is currently handled as an abnormal situation and module's data section is not being unloaded. To handle this situation without keeping module's data in memory, allow codetags with longer lifespan than the module to be loaded into their own separate memory. The in-use memory areas and gaps after module unloading in this separate memory are tracked using maple trees. Allocation tags arrange their separate memory so that it is virtually contiguous and that will allow simple allocation tag indexing later on in this patchset. The size of this virtually contiguous memory is set to store up to 100000 allocation tags. modules: Add missing entry for __ex_table
The entry for __ex_table was missing, which may make __ex_table become 1- or 2-byte aligned in modules. Add the entry to ensure it gets 32-bit aligned. As per unaligned-memory-access [0] "unaligned memory accesses [...] will not work correctly on certain platforms and will cause performance problems on others", so fix this. modules: Ensure 64-bit alignment on __ksymtab_* sections
On 64-bit architectures without CONFIG_HAVE_ARCH_PREL32_RELOCATIONS (e.g. ppc64, ppc64le, parisc, s390x,...) the __KSYM_REF() macro stores 64-bit pointers into the __ksymtab* sections. Make sure that those sections will be correctly aligned at module link time, otherwise unaligned memory accesses may happen at runtime. As per unaligned-memory-access [0] "unaligned memory accesses [...] will not work correctly on certain platforms and will cause performance problems on others", so fix this. The __kcrctab* sections store 32-bit entities, so use ALIGN(4) for those. lib: add allocation tagging support for memory allocation profiling
Introduce CONFIG_MEM_ALLOC_PROFILING which provides definitions to easily instrument memory allocators. It registers an "alloc_tags" codetag type with /proc/allocinfo interface to output allocation tag information when the feature is enabled. CONFIG_MEM_ALLOC_PROFILING_DEBUG is provided for debugging the memory allocation profiling instrumentation. Memory allocation profiling can be enabled or disabled at runtime using /proc/sys/vm/mem_profiling sysctl when CONFIG_MEM_ALLOC_PROFILING_DEBUG=n. CONFIG_MEM_ALLOC_PROFILING_ENABLED_BY_DEFAULT enables memory allocation profiling by default. arm64: unwind: add asynchronous unwind tables to kernel and modules
Enable asynchronous unwind table generation for both the core kernel as well as modules, and emit the resulting .eh_frame sections as init code so we can use the unwind directives for code patching at boot or module load time. This will be used by dynamic shadow call stack support, which will rely on code patching rather than compiler codegen to emit the shadow call stack push and pop instructions. cfi: Switch to -fsanitize=kcfi
Switch from Clang's original forward-edge control-flow integrity implementation to -fsanitize=kcfi, which is better suited for the kernel, as it doesn't require LTO, doesn't use a jump table that requires altering function references, and won't break cross-module function address equality. modules: Ensure natural alignment for .altinstructions and __bug_table sections
In the kernel image vmlinux.lds.S linker scripts the .altinstructions and __bug_table sections are 4- or 8-byte aligned because they hold 32- and/or 64-bit values. Most architectures use altinstructions and BUG() or WARN() in modules as well, but in the module linker script (module.lds.S) those sections are currently missing. As consequence the linker will store their content byte-aligned by default, which then can lead to unnecessary unaligned memory accesses by the CPU when those tables are processed at runtime. Usually unaligned memory accesses are unnoticed, because either the hardware (as on x86 CPUs) or in-kernel exception handlers (e.g. on parisc or sparc) emulate and fix them up at runtime. Nevertheless, such unaligned accesses introduce a performance penalty and can even crash the kernel if there is a bug in the unalignment exception handlers (which happened once to me on the parisc architecture and which is why I noticed that issue at all). This patch fixes a non-critical issue and might be backported at any time. It's trivial and shouldn't introduce any regression because it simply tells the linker to use a different (8-byte alignment) for those sections by default. module: combine constructors in module linker script
The constructor code for modules must be aware of init code inside different sections. Newer GCC compilers write constructors in more than one section, e.g. ".ctors.65435". These must be combined into a single ".ctors" section. In the module loader, only the ".ctors" section is searched and the constructors therein are initialized, when CONFIG_CONSTRUCTORS=y is set. Other constructors are ignored. This change combines all ".ctors.*" and the ".ctors" section, if any, in <module>.ko into a single ."ctors" section. For code coverage in GCC, this is necessary to show the code coverage for modules, since code coverage uses such constructors when initializing a module in newer version of GCC. module: ensure __cfi_check alignment
CONFIG_CFI_CLANG_SHADOW assumes the __cfi_check() function is page aligned and at the beginning of the .text section. While Clang would normally align the function correctly, it fails to do so for modules with no executable code. This change ensures the correct __cfi_check() location and alignment. It also discards the .eh_frame section, which Clang can generate with certain sanitizers, such as CFI. kbuild: lto: Merge module sections if and only if CONFIG_LTO_CLANG is enabled
Merge module sections only when using Clang LTO. With ld.bfd, merging
sections does not appear to update the symbol tables for the module,
e.g. 'readelf -s' shows the value that a symbol would have had, if
sections were not merged. ld.lld does not show this problem.
The stale symbol table breaks gdb's function disassembler, and presumably
other things, e.g.
gdb -batch -ex "file arch/x86/kvm/kvm.ko" -ex "disassemble kvm_init"
reads the wrong bytes and dumps garbage.

Modules updates for v5.12
Summary of modules changes for the 5.12 merge window: - Retire EXPORT_UNUSED_SYMBOL() and EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL_FUTURE(). These export types were introduced between 2006 - 2008. All the of the unused symbols have been long removed and gpl future symbols were converted to gpl quite a long time ago, and I don't believe these export types have been used ever since. So, I think it should be safe to retire those export types now. (Christoph Hellwig) - Refactor and clean up some aged code cruft in the module loader (Christoph Hellwig) - Build {,module_}kallsyms_on_each_symbol only when livepatching is enabled, as it is the only caller (Christoph Hellwig) - Unexport find_module() and module_mutex and fix the last module callers to not rely on these anymore. Make module_mutex internal to the module loader. (Christoph Hellwig) - Harden ELF checks on module load and validate ELF structures before checking the module signature (Frank van der Linden) - Fix undefined symbol warning for clang (Fangrui Song) - Fix smatch warning (Dan Carpenter) Signed-off-by: Jessica Yu <jeyu@kernel.org> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQJEBAABCAAuFiEEVrp26glSWYuDNrCUwEV+OM47wXIFAmA0/KMQHGpleXVAa2Vy bmVsLm9yZwAKCRDARX44zjvBcu0uD/4nmRp18EKAtdUZivsZHat0aEWGlkmrVueY 5huYw6iwM8b/wIAl3xwLki1Iv0/l0a83WXZhLG4ekl0/Nj8kgllA+jtBrZWpoLMH CZusN5dS9YwwyD2vu3ak83ARcehcDEPeA9thvc3uRFGis6Hi4bt1rkzGdrzsgqR4 tybfN4qaQx4ZAKFxA8bnS58l7QTFwUzTxJfM6WWzl1Q+mLZDr/WP+loJ/f1/oFFg ufN31KrqqFpdQY5UKq5P4H8FVq/eXE1Mwl8vo3HsnAj598fznyPUmA3D/j+N4GuR sTGBVZ9CSehUj7uZRs+Qgg6Bd+y3o44N29BrdZWA6K3ieTeQQpA+VgPUNrDBjGhP J/9Y4ms4PnuNEWWRaa73m9qsVqAsjh9+T2xp9PYn9uWLCM8BvQFtWcY7tw4/nB0/ INmyiP/tIRpwWkkBl47u1TPR09FzBBGDZjBiSn3lm3VX+zCYtHoma5jWyejG11cf ybDrTsci9ANyHNP2zFQsUOQJkph78PIal0i3k4ODqGJvaC0iEIH3Xjv+0dmE14rq kGRrG/HN6HhMZPjashudVUktyTZ63+PJpfFlQbcUzdvjQQIkzW0vrCHMWx9vD1xl Na7vZLl4Nb03WSJp6saY6j2YSRKL0poGETzGqrsUAHEhpEOPHduaiCVlAr/EmeMk p6SrWv8+UQ== =T29Q -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'modules-for-v5.12' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/jeyu/linux Pull module updates from Jessica Yu: - Retire EXPORT_UNUSED_SYMBOL() and EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL_FUTURE(). kbuild: preprocess module linker script
There was a request to preprocess the module linker script like we do for the vmlinux one. (https://lkml.org/lkml/2020/8/21/512) The difference between vmlinux.lds and module.lds is that the latter is needed for external module builds, thus must be cleaned up by 'make mrproper' instead of 'make clean'. Also, it must be created by 'make modules_prepare'. You cannot put it in arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/, which is cleaned up by 'make clean'. I moved arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/module.lds to arch/$(SRCARCH)/include/asm/module.lds.h, which is included from scripts/module.lds.S. scripts/module.lds is fine because 'make clean' keeps all the build artifacts under scripts/. You can add arch-specific sections in <asm/module.lds.h>.
