mm: memory_hotplug: make hugetlb_optimize_vmemmap compatible with memmap_on_memory
For now, the feature of hugetlb_free_vmemmap is not compatible with the feature of memory_hotplug.memmap_on_memory, and hugetlb_free_vmemmap takes precedence over memory_hotplug.memmap_on_memory. However, someone wants to make memory_hotplug.memmap_on_memory takes precedence over hugetlb_free_vmemmap since memmap_on_memory makes it more likely to succeed memory hotplug in close-to-OOM situations. So the decision of making hugetlb_free_vmemmap take precedence is not wise and elegant. The proper approach is to have hugetlb_vmemmap.c do the check whether the section which the HugeTLB pages belong to can be optimized. If the section's vmemmap pages are allocated from the added memory block itself, hugetlb_free_vmemmap should refuse to optimize the vmemmap, otherwise, do the optimization. Then both kernel parameters are compatible. So this patch introduces VmemmapSelfHosted to mask any non-optimizable vmemmap pages. The hugetlb_vmemmap can use this flag to detect if a vmemmap page can be optimized. mm: hugetlb_vmemmap: add hugetlb_optimize_vmemmap sysctl
We must add hugetlb_free_vmemmap=on (or "off") to the boot cmdline and
reboot the server to enable or disable the feature of optimizing vmemmap
pages associated with HugeTLB pages. However, rebooting usually takes a
long time. So add a sysctl to enable or disable the feature at runtime
without rebooting. Why we need this? There are 3 use cases.
1) The feature of minimizing overhead of struct page associated with
each HugeTLB is disabled by default without passing
"hugetlb_free_vmemmap=on" to the boot cmdline. When we (ByteDance)
deliver the servers to the users who want to enable this feature, they
have to configure the grub (change boot cmdline) and reboot the
servers, whereas rebooting usually takes a long time (we have thousands
of servers). It's a very bad experience for the users. So we need a
approach to enable this feature after rebooting. This is a use case in
our practical environment.
2) Some use cases are that HugeTLB pages are allocated 'on the fly'
instead of being pulled from the HugeTLB pool, those workloads would be
affected with this feature enabled. Those workloads could be
identified by the characteristics of they never explicitly allocating
huge pages with 'nr_hugepages' but only set 'nr_overcommit_hugepages'
and then let the pages be allocated from the buddy allocator at fault
time. We can confirm it is a real use case from the commit

panic: add option to dump all CPUs backtraces in panic_print
Currently the "panic_print" parameter/sysctl allows some interesting debug information to be printed during a panic event. This is useful for example in cases the user cannot kdump due to resource limits, or if the user collects panic logs in a serial output (or pstore) and prefers a fast reboot instead of a kdump. Happens that currently there's no way to see all CPUs backtraces in a panic using "panic_print" on architectures that support that. We do have "oops_all_cpu_backtrace" sysctl, but although partially overlapping in the functionality, they are orthogonal in nature: "panic_print" is a panic tuning (and we have panics without oopses, like direct calls to panic() or maybe other paths that don't go through oops_enter() function), and the original purpose of "oops_all_cpu_backtrace" is to provide more information on oopses for cases in which the users desire to continue running the kernel even after an oops, i.e., used in non-panic scenarios. So, we hereby introduce an additional bit for "panic_print" to allow dumping the CPUs backtraces during a panic event. NUMA balancing: optimize page placement for memory tiering system
With the advent of various new memory types, some machines will have multiple types of memory, e.g. DRAM and PMEM (persistent memory). The memory subsystem of these machines can be called memory tiering system, because the performance of the different types of memory are usually different. In such system, because of the memory accessing pattern changing etc, some pages in the slow memory may become hot globally. So in this patch, the NUMA balancing mechanism is enhanced to optimize the page placement among the different memory types according to hot/cold dynamically. In a typical memory tiering system, there are CPUs, fast memory and slow memory in each physical NUMA node. The CPUs and the fast memory will be put in one logical node (called fast memory node), while the slow memory will be put in another (faked) logical node (called slow memory node). That is, the fast memory is regarded as local while the slow memory is regarded as remote. So it's possible for the recently accessed pages in the slow memory node to be promoted to the fast memory node via the existing NUMA balancing mechanism. The original NUMA balancing mechanism will stop to migrate pages if the free memory of the target node becomes below the high watermark. This is a reasonable policy if there's only one memory type. But this makes the original NUMA balancing mechanism almost do not work to optimize page placement among different memory types. Details are as follows. It's the common cases that the working-set size of the workload is larger than the size of the fast memory nodes. Otherwise, it's unnecessary to use the slow memory at all. So, there are almost always no enough free pages in the fast memory nodes, so that the globally hot pages in the slow memory node cannot be promoted to the fast memory node. To solve the issue, we have 2 choices as follows, a. Ignore the free pages watermark checking when promoting hot pages from the slow memory node to the fast memory node. This will create some memory pressure in the fast memory node, thus trigger the memory reclaiming. So that, the cold pages in the fast memory node will be demoted to the slow memory node. b. Define a new watermark called wmark_promo which is higher than wmark_high, and have kswapd reclaiming pages until free pages reach such watermark. The scenario is as follows: when we want to promote hot-pages from a slow memory to a fast memory, but fast memory's free pages would go lower than high watermark with such promotion, we wake up kswapd with wmark_promo watermark in order to demote cold pages and free us up some space. So, next time we want to promote hot-pages we might have a chance of doing so. The choice "a" may create high memory pressure in the fast memory node. If the memory pressure of the workload is high, the memory pressure may become so high that the memory allocation latency of the workload is influenced, e.g. the direct reclaiming may be triggered. The choice "b" works much better at this aspect. If the memory pressure of the workload is high, the hot pages promotion will stop earlier because its allocation watermark is higher than that of the normal memory allocation. So in this patch, choice "b" is implemented. A new zone watermark (WMARK_PROMO) is added. Which is larger than the high watermark and can be controlled via watermark_scale_factor. In addition to the original page placement optimization among sockets, the NUMA balancing mechanism is extended to be used to optimize page placement according to hot/cold among different memory types. So the sysctl user space interface (numa_balancing) is extended in a backward compatible way as follow, so that the users can enable/disable these functionality individually. The sysctl is converted from a Boolean value to a bits field. The definition of the flags is, - 0: NUMA_BALANCING_DISABLED - 1: NUMA_BALANCING_NORMAL - 2: NUMA_BALANCING_MEMORY_TIERING We have tested the patch with the pmbench memory accessing benchmark with the 80:20 read/write ratio and the Gauss access address distribution on a 2 socket Intel server with Optane DC Persistent Memory Model. random: always wake up entropy writers after extraction
Now that POOL_BITS == POOL_MIN_BITS, we must unconditionally wake up entropy writers after every extraction. Therefore there's no point of write_wakeup_threshold, so we can move it to the dustbin of unused compatibility sysctls. While we're at it, we can fix a small comparison where we were waking up after <= min rather than < min. mm/pagealloc: sysctl: change watermark_scale_factor max limit to 30%
For embedded systems with low total memory, having to run applications with relatively large memory requirements, 10% max limitation for watermark_scale_factor poses an issue of triggering direct reclaim every time such application is started. This results in slow application startup times and bad end-user experience. By increasing watermark_scale_factor max limit we allow vendors more flexibility to choose the right level of kswapd aggressiveness for their device and workload requirements. arm64: perf: Add userspace counter access disable switch
Like x86, some users may want to disable userspace PMU counter altogether. Add a sysctl 'perf_user_access' file to control userspace counter access. The default is '0' which is disabled. Writing '1' enables access. Note that x86 supports globally enabling user access by writing '2' to /sys/bus/event_source/devices/cpu/rdpmc. As there's not existing userspace support to worry about, this shouldn't be necessary for Arm. It could be added later if the need arises. mm: compaction: support triggering of proactive compaction by user
The proactive compaction[1] gets triggered for every 500msec and run compaction on the node for COMPACTION_HPAGE_ORDER (usually order-9) pages based on the value set to sysctl.compaction_proactiveness. Triggering the compaction for every 500msec in search of COMPACTION_HPAGE_ORDER pages is not needed for all applications, especially on the embedded system usecases which may have few MB's of RAM. Enabling the proactive compaction in its state will endup in running almost always on such systems. Other side, proactive compaction can still be very much useful for getting a set of higher order pages in some controllable manner(controlled by using the sysctl.compaction_proactiveness). So, on systems where enabling the proactive compaction always may proove not required, can trigger the same from user space on write to its sysctl interface. As an example, say app launcher decide to launch the memory heavy application which can be launched fast if it gets more higher order pages thus launcher can prepare the system in advance by triggering the proactive compaction from userspace. This triggering of proactive compaction is done on a write to sysctl.compaction_proactiveness by user. mm/page_alloc: introduce vm.percpu_pagelist_high_fraction
This introduces a new sysctl vm.percpu_pagelist_high_fraction. It is similar to the old vm.percpu_pagelist_fraction. The old sysctl increased both pcp->batch and pcp->high with the higher pcp->high potentially reducing zone->lock contention. However, the higher pcp->batch value also potentially increased allocation latency while the PCP was refilled. mm/page_alloc: delete vm.percpu_pagelist_fraction
Patch series "Calculate pcp->high based on zone sizes and active CPUs", v2. The per-cpu page allocator (PCP) is meant to reduce contention on the zone lock but the sizing of batch and high is archaic and neither takes the zone size into account or the number of CPUs local to a zone. With larger zones and more CPUs per node, the contention is getting worse. Furthermore, the fact that vm.percpu_pagelist_fraction adjusts both batch and high values means that the sysctl can reduce zone lock contention but also increase allocation latencies. This series disassociates pcp->high from pcp->batch and then scales pcp->high based on the size of the local zone with limited impact to reclaim and accounting for active CPUs but leaves pcp->batch static. It also adapts the number of pages that can be on the pcp list based on recent freeing patterns. The motivation is partially to adjust to larger memory sizes but is also driven by the fact that large batches of page freeing via release_pages() often shows zone contention as a major part of the problem. Another is a bug report based on an older kernel where a multi-terabyte process can takes several minutes to exit. A workaround was to use vm.percpu_pagelist_fraction to increase the pcp->high value but testing indicated that a production workload could not use the same values because of an increase in allocation latencies. Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce this test case myself as the multi-terabyte machines are in active use but it should alleviate the problem. The series aims to address both and partially acts as a pre-requisite. pcp only works with order-0 which is useless for SLUB (when using high orders) and THP (unconditionally). To store high-order pages on PCP, the pcp->high values need to be increased first. This patch (of 6): The vm.percpu_pagelist_fraction is used to increase the batch and high limits for the per-cpu page allocator (PCP). The intent behind the sysctl is to reduce zone lock acquisition when allocating/freeing pages but it has a problem. While it can decrease contention, it can also increase latency on the allocation side due to unreasonably large batch sizes. This leads to games where an administrator adjusts percpu_pagelist_fraction on the fly to work around contention and allocation latency problems. This series aims to alleviate the problems with zone lock contention while avoiding the allocation-side latency problems. For the purposes of review, it's easier to remove this sysctl now and reintroduce a similar sysctl later in the series that deals only with pcp->high. docs: admin-guide: update description for kernel.hotplug sysctl
It's been a few releases since this defaulted to /sbin/hotplug. Update
the text, and include pointers to the two CONFIG_UEVENT_HELPER{,_PATH}
config knobs whose help text could provide more info, but also hint
that the user probably doesn't need to care at all.

bpf: Add kconfig knob for disabling unpriv bpf by default
Add a kconfig knob which allows for unprivileged bpf to be disabled by default. If set, the knob sets /proc/sys/kernel/unprivileged_bpf_disabled to value of 2. This still allows a transition of 2 -> {0,1} through an admin. Similarly, this also still keeps 1 -> {1} behavior intact, so that once set to permanently disabled, it cannot be undone aside from a reboot. We've also added extra2 with max of 2 for the procfs handler, so that an admin still has a chance to toggle between 0 <-> 2. Either way, as an additional alternative, applications can make use of CAP_BPF that we added a while ago. net: change netdev_unregister_timeout_secs min value to 1
netdev_unregister_timeout_secs=0 can lead to printing the
"waiting for dev to become free" message every jiffy.
This is too frequent and unnecessary.
Set the min value to 1 second.
Also fix the merge issue introduced by
"net: make unregister netdev warning timeout configurable":
it changed "refcnt != 1" to "refcnt".

net: make unregister netdev warning timeout configurable
netdev_wait_allrefs() issues a warning if refcount does not drop to 0 after 10 seconds. While 10 second wait generally should not happen under normal workload in normal environment, it seems to fire falsely very often during fuzzing and/or in qemu emulation (~10x slower). At least it's not possible to understand if it's really a false positive or not. Automated testing generally bumps all timeouts to very high values to avoid flake failures. Add net.core.netdev_unregister_timeout_secs sysctl to make the timeout configurable for automated testing systems. Lowering the timeout may also be useful for e.g. manual bisection. The default value matches the current behavior. mm/vmscan: restore zone_reclaim_mode ABI
I went to go add a new RECLAIM_* mode for the zone_reclaim_mode sysctl.
Like a good kernel developer, I also went to go update the
documentation. I noticed that the bits in the documentation didn't
match the bits in the #defines.
The VM never explicitly checks the RECLAIM_ZONE bit. The bit is,
however implicitly checked when checking 'node_reclaim_mode==0'. The
RECLAIM_ZONE #define was removed in a cleanup. That, by itself is fine.
But, when the bit was removed (bit 0) the _other_ bit locations also got
changed. That's not OK because the bit values are documented to mean
one specific thing. Users surely do not expect the meaning to change
from kernel to kernel.
The end result is that if someone had a script that did:
sysctl vm.zone_reclaim_mode=1
it would have gone from enabling node reclaim for clean unmapped pages
to writing out pages during node reclaim after the commit in question.
That's not great.
Put the bits back the way they were and add a comment so something like
this is a bit harder to do again. Update the documentation to make it
clear that the first bit is ignored.
